Cleaning Our Spaces To Create Peace

“If there is light in the soul, there is beauty in the person.
If there is beauty in the person, there is harmony in the house.
If there is harmony in the house, there is order in the nation.
If there is order in the nation, there will be peace on Earth.”
Old Chinese Proverb

There is nothing like moving country to bring up any unresolved issues that have been hiding ‘in the closet’  There is something about moving the furniture, looking through old documents, and deciding to throw stuff away that triggers shifts in the architecture of our unconscious.  In the past week I have gone through no less than 3 breakdown-breakthrough cycles as I whittle down my belongings to 6 suitcases and 10 boxes.

I have experienced a lot of avoidance around going through the boxes that need sorting before we leave.  Since we will be leaving in just over a week now the urgency to get on with it has now meant that these boxes have finally begun to be sorted.

Interestingly, on the day we committed to doing the sorting a whole host of emotional issues came up to be resolved.  Stuff that had arisen during out time in NYC but had still not been resolved.  The decision to sort the box triggered this unresolved stuff, as if the external box was a manifestation of the internal ‘boxed’ issue.  Committing to resolve the external box issue was all that was needed to bring this issue to the surface.  The breakdown of unresolved emotions was then followed the next day by a breakthrough of energy and enthusiasm that I then directed into sorting the box and continuing on with the moving process.

This made me reflect on how intrinsically linked our external and internal worlds are.  Although I am not an expert on Feng Shui, I intuitively know that this is what this modality is attempting to architect on both the internal and external realms.  By placing a waterfall in one corner of a room that represents relationships we are also encouraging more flow in our relationships internally. Conversely, having a lot of unsorted stuff in your environment can be a signifier of unresolved issues in yourself : your home being the physical outpicturing of your internal landscapes.

Since our nations are made up of people who live in houses then one way I feel we can all be contributing to peace is by keeping our households harmonious.  It is something we can all do as most of us have a home. Not everyone is able to participate in large-scale campaigns to save the world, but we can all sort out that cupboard that’s been meaning to be cleaned for the past few years.  By bringing our consciousness into the areas of our lives that we are prone to avoid we are doing our bit to bring to light and peace and harmony to the Earth.

  1. What a great post! I have a small waterfall in the corner of my room. I love to put it on at night…indeed, when I have realized that the flow in my relationship has been changed, I ended the relationship…as within, so without…so true. This post speaks millions to me…Grateful and thankful…<3

So relevant! Moving out of my apartment and realizing just how much “stuff” I have and unearthing old pictures, journals and love letters was emotional and at times unsettling. Moving into a new space though has given me the opportunity to look back on those memories (some of which were painful) and just smile at them and also clean closet, create a peaceful clutter- free environment, and put away some of the junk that was just hanging around. Although it has been tough to face my past and some of those painful experiences, it really feels great and restored my energy to leave those things where they belong (in the past, or tightly packed away in a box in my closet). Release the old and welcome the new!

    • Thanks for the positive comment meagantaylorwills! I am overjoyed to hear how relevant this post was for you and your recent experiences. I just arrived in Tunisia a few days ago and am soooo grateful for having released all the stuff we had in NYC. It truly feels as though I have a new lease on life with an abundance of energy to channel into it. I know looking back that it would not have been this way if I had not gone through the slow (and often very emotional!) process of clearing out the inner and outer ‘stuff’. The Spring Equinox is just around the corner too which is all about releasing the old and welcoming in the new…even more reason to make sure our spaces are clean clear and decluttered. Thank yo so much for reading and reblogging my post. I really appreciate it! :-)
